The Icelandic Capelin moves inshore around the island in large schools to spawn and migrate in spring and summer to feed in the plankton-rich area between Iceland, Greenland and Jan Mayen. It is an important forage fish and is the key food for the Atlantic Cod.

The Icelandic Capelin is also a good fish for human consumption with a high content of omega 3 fatty acids and is popular in countries like Japan. Capelin roe is also a sought-after product, which is why the female capelin is more in demand than the male. Masago – or capelin roe is used extensively for sushi.
